Last year Rematriation had the honor to sit down with Joy to discuss her position as 23rd United States Poet Laureate. She shares her feelings on being an inductee to the National Women’s Hall of Fame and her vision to hold a dance party at the end of her term as Poet Laureate.

Joy Harjo is an Muscogee (Creek) poet, musician, playwright, and author. She is the only Native American to ever serve as the United States Poet Laureate. She is the second poet to have served three consecutive terms.Joy was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1951 and is a member of the Muscogee Creek Nation.Harjo directs For Girls Becoming, an arts mentorship program for young Mvskoke women, and is a founding board member of the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation. Among Joy’s many accomplishments, she is the recipient of the Wallace Stevens Award for her mastery in the arts of poetry, and the Best Female Artist of the Year in the Native American Music Award (NAMMY). In 2019, Harjo was elected a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets.
